Meet Koren Lacquer | Sun Young Choi

Lacquer and Fashion

Korea's lacquer culture boasts a history of over 2,000 years. Lacquer

possesses characteristics such as waterproofing, preservation, pest

resistance, chemical resistance, insulation, and electromagnetic wave

absorption. Lacquer-dyed fabrics are eco-friendly materials with

excellent antibacterial properties and UV protection.

This exhibition showcases a collection of nine garments inspired by the

auspicious characters traditionally found in Korean everyday items

such as ceramics and furniture. These characters symbolize longevity,

prosperity, vitality, fortune, and joy.

The garments are crafted from 100% polyester organza, featuring a

silhouette of traditional Korean garments enhanced by digitally printed

characters. The design incorporates traditional lacquer techniques,

primarily applied to the letters and their outlines. This combination

creates a captivating visual and tactile experience, highlighting the

contrast between the transparent fabric and the opaque lacquer.

Choi is responsible for the overall design and conceptualization of the

garments, while Lee, as a collaborator, brings her expertise in lacquer

dyeing to the project. We hope that all who experience this exhibition

will find happiness and tranquility, echoing the positive messages of

the auspicious characters.
